Same Table, Same Holidays: Staying On Plan With GLP-1 This Season

The holidays are built around the table. Thanksgiving spreads, office parties, family dinners, the neighbor who drops off a tray of sweets — from late November through New Year’s, food is how we celebrate. If you’re on a GLP-1 weight loss program, that can feel like a problem. It isn’t. You don’t have to sit the season out, and you don’t have to choose between the celebration and the progress you’ve been making. What you need is a plan — the same kind of simple, steady planning that got you here. At True L.I.O. Health & Wellness, we work with patients across the country — telehealth in all 50 states, with flagship care right here in Miami — and every year we talk through the same three holiday moves. Here they are.

Plan the Meal Before the Meal Plans You

The easiest holiday dinner to handle is the one you’ve already thought about. A little planning ahead takes the pressure off in the moment, when the table is full and everyone is passing dishes your way.

Start with the day itself. Don’t skip meals to "save up" for dinner — arriving hungry is the fastest way to overdo it. Eat normally during the day, and think protein first: a solid, protein-rich breakfast and lunch keep you steady, so you can enjoy dinner instead of chasing it.

Then, plan your plate before you ever pick it up. Look over what’s being served, decide which dishes are your true favorites — the ones you’d actually miss — and give those the room. Everything else is optional. If you’re cooking or contributing, bring a dish you know works for you: a protein you love, a vegetable side you’ll happily fill up on. Nobody minds an extra good dish on the table, and you’ll know there’s something there with your name on it.

Same Table, Smaller Plate

Here’s the heart of it: you belong at the same table, eating the same food, as everyone else. A GLP-1 program isn’t a reason to sit out the holiday or eat a separate "diet plate" in the corner. The celebration stays exactly the same. Only the portions change.

The simplest tool is a smaller plate. A salad plate or dessert plate instead of the big dinner plate makes a reasonable portion look like what it is — a full plate. Fill it with protein first, then the vegetables and sides you planned on, and sit down with everybody else.

Eat slowly and check in with yourself as you go. Many people on GLP-1 find they feel satisfied sooner than they used to, and the holidays are a good time to listen to that signal instead of eating past it. When the plate is empty, give it a few minutes before deciding on seconds. And dessert? Have it. Choose the one you love most, take a modest serving, and enjoy it like everyone else. One holiday meal, eaten on plan, is just that — one meal. What matters is the pattern you keep across the season, not perfection on a single day.

Don’t Skip a Dose to "Make Room"

Every year, someone has the same idea: skip this week’s dose so you’ll have more room at the table. It sounds practical. It works against you.

Your program is built on consistency. Staying on your regular schedule is part of what keeps your appetite, your portions, and your progress steady week to week — and the holidays are exactly when that steadiness earns its keep. Skipping to make room for one dinner trades a month of momentum for a single meal, and it usually doesn’t even feel good: the whole point of eating on plan is enjoying the food comfortably, not filling up until you’re miserable.

So keep your schedule, plan the meal around your program — not the other way around — and let the smaller plate do the work. If you ever have questions about your schedule around a big event or a trip, ask your provider. That’s what your consultations and check-ins are for.
